If you or someone you love has sustained a TBI, Dr. Louis Eke and the team at Kornerstone Health Solutions in Sterling, VA, are passionate about and dedicated to helping you heal and overcome it.
Quick Guide to TBIs
Your brain does more than help you think. It makes your body move, stores your memories, enables your sensations, controls your emotions, helps you communicate, controls your motor skills, and so much more.
Unfortunately, many of these functions are often impacted by a TBI or traumatic brain injury. Traumatic brain injuries can be fatal. However, in many cases, they aren’t quite that severe, but they still impact your life. Below, Dr. Eke and the team at Kornerstone Health Solutions in Sterling, VA, share some types of TBIs, co-occurring conditions, and how our team can help.
Common Types of TBIs
There are several types of TBIs, but they often fall into two categories: penetrating and blunt.
Sports Concussion Injuries
Sports concussions are one of the most common types of blunt-force TBIs. In short, this type occurs when an external force hits the head hard enough that the brain moves around in the skull. This often happens when a player is tackled.
Penetrating Ballistic Brain Injuries
Penetrating ballistic injuries are slightly different. They occur when something penetrates the skull, such as a bullet or knife.
Co-Occurring Conditions
TBIs often coincide with other conditions, especially PTSD and C-PTSD.
PTSD and TBIs
TBIs are often the result of an event that is both physically and psychologically distressing, which is especially common in personal attacks and military combat. In such cases, the victim is likely to develop PTSD. Some symptoms of TBIs and PTSD are the same, while others are starkly different.
For example, a TBI can make it difficult to recall an event while PTSD can cause them to relive it in detail. Such differences can create more confusion and frustration for the victim.
C-PTSD and TBIs
C-PTSD is similar to PTSD, except that it is caused by chronic trauma instead of a one-time event. Unfortunately, in cases of chronic physical abuse, the victim is more likely to sustain one or more TBIs.
Overcoming TBIs
TBIs can impact you in many physical, mental, and emotional ways, but they don't have to control your life. Neurofeedback testing allows our doctor to evaluate your condition, strengths, weaknesses, and other factors. With this information, our team can develop an effective plan for helping you overcome your challenges and heal.
